THE VILLAGE

Crystal Waters Permaculture Village began in 1987 and incorporates clusters of private freehold and leasehold lots. These are linked by nature corridors, allowing the free movement of animals, birds and people through the common land shared by all.

The 640 acre property is bordered on two sides by clear crystal streams. From fertile river flats, the land wanders up ridges and gullies to the high forests above. Its 83 one acre lots have been sited on the side of ridges, between which seventeen dams have been constructed, all linked by seven kilometres of roads that follow the natural contours of the landscape.

Our Body Corporate manages the property, a Community Cooperative encourages business developments and various informal groups provide for social, cultural and spiritual needs.
OUR SANCTURY

The careful design and management of the property have allowed Crystal Waters to become a sanctuary for birds, animals and people. Here, the principles of caring for one another and the earth have produced an environment of clean air, clean water and clean food. Village by-laws are designed to encourage residents and visitors to interact sensitively with other people, the land and the wildlife.

  • To encourage a wide diversity of animal species, no cats and dogs are allowed.
  • To protect river species, fishing is only allowed in the stocked dams.
  • To enrich our quality of life, we avoid using chemicals whenever possible - indoors and outdoors.

A LIVING COMMUNITY

We are a community of 200 people, spanning all generations, and from some fifteen different national origins. All of us have been attracted to Crystal Waters to experience the community lifestyle and to experiment with sustainable living systems.

Our diverse educational, artistic, spiritual, and technical backgrounds have generated a creative friction that is both challenging and stimulating. While some aspects of the village are well developed, such as waste utilisation systems and innovative building approached, others such as social structures, alternative energy and transport systems are evolving daily.

Some residents operate businesses at Crystal Waters (e.g. eco-design consultancy, building, garden supplies, organic food, health/healing services and educational services) while others work away from the property.

Listen to an ABC Radio story on Crystal Waters.

We have produced an educational DVD which can be ordered here.
